- VLC – opensource multimedia player. I use this more than Windows media player as it can play any type of media under the sun.
- GIMP – alternative to Adobe Photoshop. My problem with Adobe is that it tends to open slowly (too bloated). Alternatively, if you want to just touch up photos, you can use Paint.net .
- PDF X-change Viewer or Foxit Reader - more lightweight than the Adobe reader. I use the former more as I can annotate and highlight text in pdfs, and I find that the rendering is much better; no bookmarking, though – you have to pay for that.
You can find a number of alternative software (hopefully, free) from Alternativeto, which features substitutes for Windows, Mac, and Linux software.
Oh, and don’t forget to grab a copy of Firefox 3.5.
