OFW Online, a free service that offers OFWs and their families online counseling, is now live. Check it out here. Spearheaded by Dr. Regina M. Hechanova of the Ateneo Department of Psychology and Ateneo CORD, and in partnership with the Ateneo Department of Information Systems and Computer Science and Ugnayan at Tulong Para sa Maralitang Pamilya Foundation, Inc. (UGAT Foundation), the service also provides a venue wherein family members can chat and OFWs can post and share experiences in forums. The service was made possible by a grant from the Singapore Internet Research Center and International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
Those who would register would be, in time, asked questions about their concerns, experiences and difficulties with regards to their use or non-use of the said site (as this is a part of a study on the effectiveness of ICT in providing psychosocial support to OFWs and their families); OFWs’ issues and concerns would also be extracted from counseling transcripts and forums. Nevertheless, personal and individual counseling information would remain confidential. See the Terms of Use here.
I think this is a timely service as studies have indicated that having a family member who works abroad do take its toll on the family and that they need all the support they can get. So just try it; as I understand, you can opt out of it anytime (read Terms of Service).
