I just watched a show in which an owner was building a new “store” because he became embroiled in a legal battle against his former “store manager.” This “store manager” had been a well-known and award-winning marketer so the owner was more than willing to build a “store” for said “manager.” But, apparently, the awards and accolades entered the manager’s head and he started feeling that he deserved certain privileges. The owner eventually balked at the “store manager’s” grandiose demands and kicked him out of the business arrangement.
When I see or hear situations like these, I often wonder why some people would expect that the sun, moon, and the stars be given to them - just because they think they deserve it, or just because it’s them
. Of course, I believe in people’s inalienable rights to freedom and happiness, but not to the extent of taking advantage of others’ admiration, kindness, generosity, trust, or weakness.
A worst situation would be when the ones who have been extending their generosity feel pressured and anxious to “fix” everything (that is, give in to the demands) for fear that the “relationship” would be broken; sometimes they unknowingly take on the bulk of the work, while the other party steps all over them. Funny that this often happens when we feel that the other party is greatly in need of our help — Reality check — I think no one is that hopeless, and that one of the greatest things that a human being could do for another human being is to help them help themselves.
I believe that by guiding people to stand on their own two feet, as opposed to treating them like children (who eventually become bratty and clingy), would help them acquire dignity and self-respect, and in the process you wouldn’t lose yours or your sanity.
Just my two centavos.
P.S. If you find yourself with people who take advantage of you, I think it would be wise if you also examine your own motivations for attracting and keeping these relationships in the first place.
