I rarely dream any more, or more precisely, I don’t remember my dreams. My friend says that’s good because it seems to mean nothing grave is bothering me (wow, I don’t have issues?! ). But two days ago, I dreamt that while visiting a used-books store, I chanced upon a book that I (felt) had been looking for since forever. Apparently , it was written by a Filipina author in the 1940′s-1950′s, its cover was that of a woman who had a flower tucked behind her ear (Hawaiian much?), her face was outlined in lime green. When I asked how much it was for, the saleslady told me P180,000 – I felt scandalized – it was a dusty photocopy, with a tacky hardbound cover! The last thing I remember is that my “line of sight” panned to an old brown typewriter.
I’ve been wondering what that was all about; the fact that I remembered it may be of some significance. So I looked it up in a dream dictionary. Apparently dreaming of books “…indicates calmness. You are moving toward your goals at a slow and steady pace. Books also symbolize knowledge, intellect, information and wisdom…. The dream may represent your calling into a specific field of work or an area that you need to devote more study to. To see dusty books in your dream, denotes forgotten knowledge or previous “chapters” of your life.” Hmmm…interesting. And seeing a typewriter “indicates that you need to open the lines of communication with someone in your life.” Hmmm… doubly interesting (because I’ve been thinking of getting in touch with “someone” lately).
Anyway, the importance of dreams have been emphasized by Carl Gustav Jung, an influential psychiatrist/psychologist, who emphasized that people shouldn’t just depend on the logical mind but also attempt to understand the unconscious through dreams, art, mythology, religion, and philosophy. He has a semi-autobiographical book “Memories, Dreams, Reflections,” of which I have a copy but have not yet read . He had also published a book on dream symbolism and analysis, simply entitled “Dreams.”
