Thanks to everyone who texted in, called, emailed today. Truth be told, I have always looked forward to my birthday and always think thought that it is anti-climactic that it happens so close at the beginning of every year. I like getting older – yup, I really do – until which age, I don’t know, maybe I’ll re-think the enthusiasm when I’m about to turn 40.
To me growing old is symbolic of acquiring the thing that I most want in life – wisdom.
But the things I want to accomplish this year are:
Read Strunk and White’s “Elements of Style,” from front to backcover.
See my friends more. Aside from my family, I’ve always been grateful that I have the pals that I do; they’re brilliant in their own right and have different life experiences from than me, so I learn a lot from them. Plus, there’s nothing like a strong support system.
WRITE and READ more. Haven’t gotten around to finishing (or starting) the books at my bedside, and I’m adding more. I’ll start off the year with “Pale Fire” by Vladimir Nabokov. His reportedly arrogance aside, I mean really, if you want to learn about voice (the way words sound on the page – read “Lolita”, and you’ll instinctively know what I mean) and use of language, he’s one to turn to. P.S. you might find “Lolita” horrifying. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Wishlist:
Global online library. Only way I can get my hands on things I want to read is to have them shipped, which costs mucho dinero. I don’t mind if my neck aches from reading off a monitor screen.
A few inches off my tummy. Oh, wait, do I have to work for that?
Get through the economic slump. That goes for you , too.
